When the author spoke at a meeting on the real purpose of life a lady came up to him and asked: “How do I find a purpose in life?” The author never forgot that and the book is written for her and many, many others who are searching for something more satisfying in their lives than their own advancement.
It covers a wide spectrum of personalities who have demonstrated their purpose and fulfillment in their own lives.
Pope John Paul II said:
“Man has a great need to know whether it is worthwhile to be born, to live, to struggle, to suffer and to die – and whether it is worthwhile to commit oneself to some ideal superior to material and contingent interests – whether there is a ‘why’ that justified his earthly existence…. This, then, is the essential problem. Giving a meaning to a human being, to his choices, to his life, to his journey.”
Personalities included are Baba Amte and his son, Prakash, (both Magsaysay Award winners); Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu; Narayan Murthy and Sudha Murthy.
The concluding chapter is important. The author comes to the conclusion that one does not find deeper purpose in life while looking for it for one’s own self but thinking of other people and what he can do for them.
